On the evening, students were be able to participate in practical workstations and interact with senior doctors and consultants who work in areas such as: Anaesthetics; Cardiology; Obstetrics; Paediatrics; Psychiatry and General Practice.
Western Trust Opthamology consultant, Dr David Mulholland, with pupils from St. Columba's College, Stranorlar at the open evening at Altnagelvin Hospital.
Head of the Royal College of Surgeons research department, Martyn Coomer, spoke about choosing a medical school and preparing an application, while Dr Inez Cooke of Queen’s University, gave a talk on preparing personal statements and interview skills.
Current students, Peter Doherty and Kelly Reilly, also reflected on life as a medical student.
“It is the business of the RSC to work to maintain the highest standards of medical training and practice. It is important that students get to know about all branches of medicine and we welcome the proactive approach the Western Trust is taking to attract students to medicine as a career," said Dr Cooke.
Western Trust chairman, Gerard Guckian added: "Students had the chance to interact with doctors who are working at the frontline of our hospital services and in general practice. They also were given advice on how to make the best of their applications. It is a positive step to encourage students to consider medicine as a professional career and to give them very practical help along the way.”
