Muff homeowners "failed by
Council"
07.01.10
INISHOWEN Councillor,
Pádraig MacLochlainn has hit out at the week-long
loss of a water supply suffered by many homeowners
in the Muff area.
He described the loss of water, for up to seven days
in some areas in the parish, as “indefensible”.
“While I appreciate that Donegal County Council
staff were working hard across the county in very
difficult circumstances, dealing with water
shortages, I cannot defend the failure to provide
water to some homes in the Muff area for over a week
and the council’s outsourced communications system
to the public.
"Some residents conveyed to me that they were being
“forced to live like pigs” with no water supply to
their homes. Older people have also been seriously
affected with a loss of heating because they rely on
water and back boiler systems." |
The local councillor
said he was particularly outraged at the call
centre-operated communications system on offer to
the public throughout this crisis. He claimed that
in some cases mistaken information was given to
callers.
"I was taking calls from residents across housing
estates and townlands in Muff as well as residents
in Quigley’s Point, Redcastle, and Drung. While all
these areas were without water at some stage, some
estates and townlands in Muff were without water for
a week despite the Council’s claims that water had
been reconnected. |

“There will have to be
a detailed report submitted to the councillors,
outlining the water supply challenges in that area
and lessons learned from this crisis. While I
appreciate that burst pipes caused by the freezing
conditions had a significant impact, I fail to
understand how that can cause water loss for over a
week in some cases. Questions will have to be
answered," he said. |
