Greencastle music legacy lives on 30.09.10

by Linda McGrory

THE musical legacy of the late founder of Greencastle Accordian Band, Kathleen Duffy, will live on in a new music school being set up in the area.
Ceolan School of Music has been formed by Inishowen traditional musicians, Clodagh Warnock and Roisin McGrory. Thanks to a donation of €1200 that had lain dormant since the local accordian band was wound up, the new music school has been able to purchase nine fiddles that will be loaned out to aspiring musicians.
Clodagh Warnock said the money was very welcome to the fledgling school.
"We have been trying to raise a bit of money that could be used to buy instruments for the Ceolan School of Music so that instead of the parents being out the additional cost of having to buy an instrument, we would have been able to loan or rent the instrument out," said Clodagh.

"I was approached by a committee member of the Greencastle Accordion Band, which had been a successful venture that had wound up a few years previously. "Unfortunately their founding member and chairperson, Kathleen Duffy, had died, and money that the committee had gathered over the years had lain unused in a bank account.
"It had always been their intention to donate this money to a music-based organisation in Kathleen's name. We were very grateful to receive the money and already we have purchased and received nine new fiddles that will be available to pupils for rent."
Ceolan School of Music will teach music to children aged 6-18 years and will be based at Moville Community College. Its main focus will be traditional music and tuition will be offered in whistle, fiddle, button accordion, piano accordion and traditional singing. Tuition in other instruments such as harp, flute and mandolin will be offered depending on demand. It will be €10 to enrol for the year and a weekly lesson will be €6 per hour. Registration day is this Sunday, October 3, from 3pm-4pm at Moville Community College. Classes will be on Tuesday evenings starting October 5. For more information please call 086 1522322.
