PUPILS and staff at
Monreagh N.S., in Carrigans are celebrating
confirmation that they are to get a new school.
Education Minister Mary Coughlan today confirmed
that Monreagh had been approved a new school
building to replace the existing one. Senator
Cecilia Keaveney described the move as "hugely
significant" to the entire community.
"This has been a long road with many difficulties
along its path for Monreagh since I first met Bertie
Ahern with Senator Paddy McGowan and Cllr Jim
Devenney. I was always confident that there would be
progress and in the fact that it has taken many
years, it is definitely news worth waiting for,"
said Senator Keaveney.
"I know many people, Evelyn McCracken as principal,
the teachers, students and parents have had their
hopes up as site after site got a certain distance
before encountering problems. They can truly breathe
a sigh of relief as the more enjoyable disruption of
building and moving becomes the reality."
The Moville-based represenative said the old school
had "served its time and its purpose" but it was now
time for change.
"Life and the speed of the roads in the area have
changed to a level that needed a similar response in
terms of the infrastructure there. I'm personally
delighted with the news from Minister Mary Coughlan
as I know the board of the school will be.
"Today will begin a new era for education in
Monreagh. The certainty that the announcement
delivers will be a boost for the future schooling of
the community. I wish the next phase well and look
forward to the opening of the new premises in the
not too distant future." |
