Ó Cuív opens Buncrana offices
14.09.10
THE Government intends
to review plans to move over 10,000 staff to
decentralised locations around the country, Social
Protection Minister Éamon Ó Cuív has confirmed.
Mr Ó Cuív made the announcement as he officially
opened the new Social Protection offices in Buncrana
on Friday.
He said the Cabinet would review the
decentralisation process when 4,000 employees were
relocated. So far, 3,160 staff have been transferred
to departments around the country.
“We will review the situation when we reach the
4,000 number, which should be next year. I am very
happy with how the process has gone. Of course, the
plan has had its critics and I think that criticism
has been harsh at times," he said. |

Senator Cecilia
Keaveney said the minister's visit was informative
and consultative.
"The fact that the minister came to open a state of
the art decentralised office and a consolidated
section of the Department of Social Protection that
was delivered in the face of both national and some
local scepticism speaks for itself," she said.
"(He) alluded not only to the 87 jobs currently
filled in the decentralised office but the fact that
there were another 12 places sanctioned for filling.
He spoke too of the boost that such an office gives
to the stature of any town when outsiders look at
the town as a potential investment location.
"I will continue to press for the expansion of the
numbers employed here but am very pleased that those
who doubted that it would be built or that it would
be occupied, are now very much proven wrong, as the
building exudes a very vibrant and keen working
environment," she added.
Minister Ó Cuív spoke with staff and also met with a
number of interest groups during his visit to
Inishowen. |
