Carn Show Day - then and now 29.07.10

O'Doherty's keep equine tradition alive

A Buncrana family's long tradition of equestrian sportsmanship is marked by these two photographs taken at Carn Agricultural Show, 72 years apart.
The black-and-white newspaper photo depicts Buncrana solicitor Ronnie H.C. O'Doherty as a young equestrian sportsman on his mount 'GE' in 1938. A pupil of the local Merrick Riding School, he had just taken first place in the Speed Trial and second place in the Riding Test 2 on his trusty pony.
The recent photograph, snapped at Carn Show Day on July 17, 2010, is that of Ronnie's grand-daughter, Una O'Doherty, from Pillar Park, Buncrana. She is on her Connemara pony 'Darragh Dubh' and has just been awarded the rosette in the Style and Appearance category.
Una's father Ronan said: "The O'Dohertys have a long tradition of horse riding and competing and Una is now the third generation. She and 'Darragh Dubh' make a great team so long may the tradition continue."
