Cross border deal on illegal
parkers
04.03.10
CROSS border drivers
who attempt to evade parking fees and tolls will now
have to pay up.
A pilot data exhange project to allow the
authorities in both jurisdictions pursue motorists
who cross the border without paying fees, tolls or
fines came into operation yesterday. It will run
until the end of November 2010.
It was welcomed yestereday by Donegal North East T.D.,
Deputy Niall Blaney who said it was an "important
step in traffic enforcement".
“Data on vehicle ownership will be exchanged using
the highest level of security and will be monitored
in each jurisdiction through an agreed audit
regime," said Deputy Blaney. |
“The Department of
Transport already works closely with the Driver and
Vehicle Agency in Northern Ireland on the issue of
motor tax and abandoned vehicles.
Every year, thousands of drivers do not pay parking
and other fines knowing they cannot be pursued by
the authorities.
Border counties like Donegal can be particularly bad
hit as recently revealed in relation to unpaid fines
in Buncrana.
Deputy Blaney added:; “Offending motorists were
always obliged to pay the fines, the difference is
that now the offenders can be pursued. |

Refusal to pay the fine
may result in court action.
“It is important that enforcement of fines happens
on both sides of the border. Living in a different
jurisdiction is no excuse for failing to pay. It is
unfair to those law abiding drivers that others
evade payment. I am pleased to see the relevant
agencies on both sides of the border working so
closely together to address this issue."
