Tragic death of local pensioner 07.09.10

by Linda McGrory

THE funeral took place this week of an elderly man who died during tree-felling work at his home. Paddy Havlin (74) died as a relative felled mature trees for him in the driveway of his home at Clar, Redcastle, around 7.45pm last Friday.
Emergency services including fire-fighters, ambulance personnel and Gardai responded but efforts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. The widowed father-of-five was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.45pm. Mr Havlin had lived alone since his wife died around eleven years ago. He had been unwell in recent times and was a regular at the HSE day care centre in Moville. Fr Anthony Mailey, who knew the victim well and who officiated at Monday’s requiem mass, said the man’s family were devastated by the events. "This was a very tragic accident. Paddy was a modest, good-humoured man who was enjoying the autumn of his life.

His family have been left terribly shocked by this sudden and sad loss," said Fr Mailey.
Gardai in Moville are investigating the accident.
