Students fundraise for Romanian
orphans
09.06.10
DAVID Deeney and
students from Scoil Mhuire will continue a 12 year
association with the Fagaras orphanage in Romania
this October when he leads a group of eight girls to
the town.
Over the years the students, in conjunction with the
North West Romanian Appeal, have worked at the baby
clinic to improve conditions for orphaned children,
and Mr Deeney says the work has had a profound
effect on the students.
“It’s a massive benefit to them as young adults,” he
said. “When they see how little those orphans have,
they come back with a completely new outlook on
their lives. They really learn to appreciate what
they have, their families, their friends, their
gadgets and other possessions.
“The return with a heightened emotional maturity and
it really spurs them on academically when they
realise the opportunities they enjoy here.”
“When they travel to Romania, the girls will give
the children the care, love and attention they
deserve and by the end of the week you can really
see a change in the children’s behaviour,” Mr Deeney
added. |

The North West Romanian
Appeal have rebuilt two orphanages over the past
number of years, and last year donated 15 cots and
two defibrillators to the baby clinic.
Over the coming weeks the Scoil Mhuire pupils and
their families have organised a series of
fundraising events, with moneys raised going towards
nappies, baby food, nursery items and equipment,
medicines, blankets and clothes. They also hope to
raise enough money to put in double glazed windows
and new external and internal doors.
With the support of the North Pole Cycle Club and
Inishowen Athletics Club, they have organised a
cycle race and fun run/walk for Sunday 13 June.
The cycle race leaves from Scoil Mhuire at 10am,
heading to Clonmany through Drumfries and back to
Buncrana via Urris, Dunaff, Leenan, Letter, Cross
Connell and Drumfries. Refreshments will be served
afterwards and cyclists are asked to make a €10
donation to the appeal.
The 5 kilometre fun run and walk leaves Scoil Mhuire
at 2pm on Sunday 13 June.
In addition, the girls have also organised a Big
Band Jam, at the Sugar Room, Buncrana, for Friday 11
June. The jam will feature a fantastic mix of local
bands and musicians and gets under way at 9.30pm.
Admission is €10 and it’s a strictly over 18s event.
