Porthaw woman shines in Glasgow 23.09.10

A BUNCRANA woman's excellent skills in event management has won her a prestigious prize at the Scottish Events Awards in Glasgow.
Kate Bouchier-Hayes is events co-ordinator with the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) in Edinburgh and her organisational talents saw her beat off competition from some of the country's best known event management companies to take the award for Best Small Event. Kate is from Porthaw Glen.
Speaking this week she said she was shocked when her name was called out as the winner of the award.
"I was amazed as we were nominated together with some of the biggest event management companies in Scotland. We won the award for the organisation of the two-day 10th Birthday Party celebrations of the Scottish Youth Parliament in June of last year. Around 300 delegates, aged between 14 and 25, took part in a debate on Scotland’s constitutional future, questioned a prestigious panel, ate a three-course meal, heard from seven external speakers and a top comedian, marched down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and elected 15 people to lead the organisation for the year ahead – it was a fairly busy weekend!
"In practical terms, the event used three venues - including the streets of Edinburgh; worked with 13 suppliers providing everything from accommodation to cupcakes; collected several thousand petitions; involved five SYP staff, two Government ministers; made use of cutting edge technology ranging from video to electronic voting pads and, perhaps most impressively, cost a little over £15,000. Given the tight budgets, timescales and range of requirements, the Scottish Youth Parliament is extremely proud of our achievements in relation to our 10th Birthday Event," Kate said.

The awards were presented at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow last Thursday night.
They are the only annual scheme that reward and celebrate all areas of the thriving events industry in Scotland.
Now in its third year, The Scottish Event Awards are going from strength-to-strength, with event organisers, promoters, in house-teams, venues and suppliers all entered into the awards.
Kate collected the award in the Best Small Event (under 1,000 attendees). "Other nominees in our category were – Maximillion Events who won last year and are a massive, very successful events company in Scotland and Barclays Wealth for an Experience Event. We were also nominated for the Best Education Event but didn’t get it," added Kate.
