Tedstone puts skates on park plan 12.04.10

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

BUNCRANA Mayor Lee Tedstone is pushing for a new state-of-the-art concrete skate park to begin construction before the end of the year.
The purpose-built recreational environment could see skateboarders, roller skaters and roller-bladers showing off their skills on the shorefront by summer 2011.
Buncrana Mayor Lee Tedstone is appealing to councillors to back his motion and move to a feasibility stage on the proposed shorefront venture, which is expected to provide a huge boost to the local economy.
“I am calling on the Town Council to release the funds as soon as possible for this flagship infrastructure project, which will draw visitors to Buncrana from all over the North West.
“I have spoken to groups across the region who have said that this unique facility could attract thousands of competitors and spectators alike into Inishowen,” he said.
A skate park may contain half-pipes, quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, full pipes, pools, bowls, snake runs stairsets, and any number of other objects. Originally designed for skateboarding, the parks have evolved to support mainly roller bladers and BMX riders.

The first skate park in the world was built in March of 1976 in Carlsbad, California.
Concrete skate parks, now pretty much the industry standard, can cost three times as much to build as parks with ramps and wooden obstacles, but in the long run they require fewer repairs and less maintenance.
“Skate parks are important amenities for the younger generation and I am hoping that it will be a focal point for the town. When I lived in Birmingham the facility there attracted thousands of visitors every week,” added Cllr Tedstone.
