Big jump in anti-freeze sales

SOME Inishowen businesses have been enjoying an
unexpected end of year boom after unseasonal Arctic
conditions descended on the peninsula last week.
Local motor shops were seeing a run on de-icer and
anti-freeze while oil companies were struggling to
keep up with demand for home heating fuel as lorries
attempted to reach isolated areas of the peninsula
on frozen roads. |
George McLaughlin, of
McLaughlin Motor Factors, said the Buncrana car
accessories shop was experiencing a particularly
busy period over the past week.
“We have already sold out of snow socks and snow
chains but we will have more in stock this weekend
to meet increasing demand. These items have proved
particularly popular with people who live in
isolated country areas, where many roads remain
treacherous. We have also been inundated with
motorists seeking de-icer, anti-freeze and ice
scrapers,” he said.
George revealed that McLaughlin Motor Factors also
stock another important weapon against the freezing
conditions with an anti-ice spray which can be
applied to windscreens in the evening preventing an
overnight freeze.
Advising motorists to remain cautious, George said
it was important to leave cars running in the
morning and make sure all windows were clear before
setting off on a journey. |

A local oil delivery
firm spokesman said that his company was busy but
that conditions were not as bad as last winter so
far.
“Driving conditions are not as severe as they were
last January or February but we are still hampered
with deliveries in some areas of Inishowen. I would
urge people to get a few emergency drums from petrol
stations if lorries can’t reach their home,” he
said.
The spokesman also urged homeowners to fill up their
tanks now ahead of an anticipated rise in the price
of home heating oil in the forthcoming budget. |
