Donegal Sports Star nominations
13.01.10
23 local athletes and
teams among nominees
INISHOWEN figures prominently among the nominees for
the 2009 Donegal Sports Star Awards. The nominations
were announced following a meeting of the organising
committee at the Silver Tassie Hotel in Letterkenny
on Sunday. In all, there are 31 categories with 122
nominations being received for the prestigious
awards.
The awards ceremony takes place in the Silver Tassie
Hotel on Friday, January 29. Last year’s overall
winner was the Letterkenny-based kickboxer Tommy
McCafferty. Tickets for the presentation function
are priced at €35 for adults and €25 for children.
Sports Star Award night tickets can be had by
contacting Noelle on 0879153125.
Book early to avoid disappointment as a very large
attendance is expected for one of the biggest nights
in the Donegal sporting calendar. The special guest
for the function will be the chief executive officer
of the Irish Sports Council, John Treacy. The
Waterford man is one of Ireland’s most celebrated
sporting heroes having excelled in the athletic
world, winning the World Cross Country Championships
twice in 1978 (Glasgow) and 1979 (Limerick). His
biggest achievement came at the Los Angeles Olympics
five years later when he was a silver medallist in
the marathon. Once again Donegal County Council is
the main sponsor of the Donegal Sports Star Awards
and Mayor Cllr Brendan Byrne will represent the
local authority.
