Doherty commissioned for tourism study 02.06.10

DONEGAL Senator Pearse Doherty has been approved by the Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Sport and Tourism, to compile a report on the tourism sector and its potential for job creation.
“Tourism, particularly in western counties, holds major potential for job creation, yet that potential is not been realised. Ireland needs to examine how best to tap into the tourist market and ensure that all the advantages and attractions that we have are being promoted."
Senator Doherty said the potential of the tourism sector needed to be embraced to create much-needed jobs, particularly in rural communities.
Senator Pearse Doherty is to compile a report on the potential of the tourism sector particularly in western and north western counties such as Donegal.
"In my report I intend to examine all of these issues and provide the committee and Government with concrete recommendations that will both create jobs within this sector and also attract more visitors to our regions.
“I am delighted that I have the opportunity to compile a report for the Joint Oireachtas Committee, on the issue of the potential for job creation in the tourism sector. There is a responsibility on all of us who are in positions of influence to step up to the mark and provide solutions to our economic situation. This report will be a part of my contribution."
The Donegal senator's previous report 'Awakening the West – Overcoming Social and Economic Inequality' examined the tourism sector in the west, its potential and its deficiencies.
In his new study, he says he will take "a more in-depth look" into the tourism sector and examine particularly how it can be used to create jobs and "get Ireland back to work".
