Travellers thank Michael McLoone
21.07.10
TRAVELLERS in Donegal
have warmly thanked recently-retired county manager
Michael McLoone for his contribution to tackling
their concerns over the years.
The Donegal Travellers Project said Mr McLoone
worked with them in what was often a "very difficult
climate".
"In an often very difficult climate, Michael McLoone
worked with the Donegal Travellers Project to tackle
issues which Travellers face on a daily basis in the
areas of health, education, employment, racism and
anti-social behaviour," said the group's
accommodation worker, Hugh Friel.
The organisation also praised the former county
manager for his involvement in making Donegal one of
the first counties nationwide to roll out an
inter-agency Traveller consultative committee, which
provides a collaborative approach to Traveller
issues. |

Project manager,
Siobhan McLaughlin said: "Management and staff of
the Donegal Travellers Project appreciate the
helpful approach that Michael McLoone brought to our
work with him in the past, and wish him all the best
in future. The group also welcomed the appointment
of Seamus Neely as the new county manager and
expressed the hope they would have as good a working
relationship with him.
"We know there's a recession on, but hope in these
challenging times ahead that the Donegal Travellers
Project and the county manager can continue working
productively together to address the poor living
conditions that affect many Traveller families.
"As part of that effort, we welcome the opportunity
to implement a plan to address transient
accommodation around the county."
Meanwhile, the Donegal Travellers Project has moved
to new premises, but remains centrally located in
Letterkenny.
"Due to funding cutbacks we have had to move, but
we're still central in the town and readily
accessible," said Siobhan. The new office is on
Pearse Road, on the second floor of the building
housing McGinley Motors and the Irish Wheelchair
Association at ground level. The telephone number
remains the same, 074 912 9281 and opening hours at
the office are 9.30am to 5pm. |
