Welcome to Urris
15.11.10
by Eamonn Mac Dermott
A NATURAL stone monument welcoming people to Urris
has been unveiled by the local development group
thanks to a big community effort by people in the
area.
A recent meeting of Urris Community Development
Group agreed that something should be done to mark
the area for visitors. The group commissioned local
stonemason, Richie Dick, who volunteered his
services free of charge.
He also brought in four more local men Charlie
Hagan, Neil Doherty, John Kerr and James Copen Jnr
who also worked free of charge.
Four councillers contributed funding towards the
works, Padraig Mac Lochlainn, John Ryan, Charlie
McConalogue and Rena Donaghey.
The rock was engraved by Jimmy Devlin (Memorials,
Bridgend) also free of charge. Tressels and flower
boxes were made and erected by local man Peter
Doherty (Tim), while Sean O’Neill did the digger
groundwork, again at no cost. |

Members of Urris Community
Development Group and local councillors unveil the
new welcome monument. |
Roadside kerbing was
done at a very reasonable rate by local contractor,
Philip Doherty.
Approximately 20 local people were involved in this
project, making it a real community effort.
A spokesperson for the Urris Development Group
pointed out that although the welcome rock is
situated at Toland’s bridge, they are in no way
insinuating that Urris begins at this point.
The site of the rock was chosen as this was the
safest place to locate such a project, and this was
agreed after full consultation with the County
Council roads engineer.
There is similar project on the cards for the Gap of
Mamore area, which will hopefully commence in the
coming weeks.
The Urris Community Development committee is also
busy with plans to relocate dangerous poles in the
area and the further upkeep of the Urris area is
ongoing.
After successfully collecting more than 100 bags of
rubbish this year in three clean up days, the
committee would like to thank all those volunteers
who came out and helped with any of our events this
year. |
