MARY Byrne may be delighting millions of viewers on
the X-Factor every Saturday and Sunday night but the
popular Dublin diva’s stratospheric rise to fame
began in Inishowen two years ago, when a local
musician convinced her that she was good enough to
be on television.
While on holiday in Moville, the unknown Mary
delivered a stunning impromptu set with former
teacher Paddy McLaughlin during the weekly session
in Rawdon’s Bar. A musician for forty years, Paddy
instantly recognised the Ballyfermot mother’s
talent.
“Mary was up from Dublin with a group of friends or
family during the Friday night session. I always
start with Irish music then mix in a few songs with
guest singers. I suppose when she heard other style
music and saw other people doing a song, Mary was
tempted up for a tune,” Paddy said.
“She sang a couple songs but the one that really
stood out for me was ‘The Young New Mexican Pupeteer’
by Tom Jones. It was new to me but I managed to back
her [on guitar] by the second verse. Mary really got
the crowd going; she was a total natural. I told her
she could be on TV she was so good!”
“Local man John Collins was there that night singing
too and it was him who recognised her on X-Factor. I
dont watch the programme and probably would have
missed the connection without him. I tuned into the
show on ITV last Saturday night and sure enough it
was Mary. I couldn’t believe it!” Paddy added.
Supermarket worker Mary Byrne (50) is one of the
favourites to win the X-Factor this year with
thousands of Irish fans voting for the popular
performer, who has already reached the final eight. |
