Boxer to become Bill of the ball 22.10.09

Inishowen sportsmen and politicians getting jiggy with it

by Simon McGeady, Inishowen Independent

IF IT'S good enough for Michael Carruth then it’s good enough for Illies’ own Irish champion boxer William McLaughlin. The European Union silver-medallist has been practicing fancy footwork of a different kind in recent weeks as he prepares to take part in a local version of the TV dancing show ‘Celebrity Jigs and Reels.’ Derry City football Gareth McGlynn has also agreed to take part in the event.
The show, which is being run by the McConomy School of Irish dancing, will be held in the Whitehorse Hotel in Derry this Saturday, October 24.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent, McLaughlin said he just hopes not to mess up too many times in front of the judges on Saturday night.
Willie McLaughlin and Fahan dancer Michelle Bradley. “I am going to be nervous alright. I did a little line dancing when I was younger, but never Irish dancing. I’ve only had a two half hour practice session so far but Michelle has been great. It’s been hard work keeping up with her dance moves. The practice sessions are like training for boxing in one way because you have to concentrate all the time. Any you still work up a sweat. Irish dancing is a lot faster than I thought.”
Fahan girl Michelle has come up with an Irish dancing routine
for the pair and a solo dance for William.
“The pressure will be on, because during our practice dances Michelle has been prompting me, but on the night I will have to remember the entire routine myself. It should be a bit of craic.”
Other local ‘celebrities’ confirmed for the show include Buncrana Town Councillor Peter McLaughlin, Donegal County Councillor John Ryan, who will be dancing with his daughter Sarah. Cllr McLaughlin will take to the floor with Rockytown, Buncrana dancer Tricia Doherty.
Local and well-known representatives from businesses in Donegal and Derry will also perform an Irish dancing routine, each with a dancer from the McConomy School. It promises to be a great night's fun and a chance to see these well-known Inishowen sportsmen and politicians on the back foot for once.
Dancing with the stars of local sport and public life, members of the McConomy School will hope impress the judges and raise applause from the audience.
The starting time this unique version of Celebrity Jigs and Reels is 8pm. Doors open at 7pm. Music from 11.30pm to 12.30pm Adm. £5.
