Burglars strike fear in North Inishowen 12.02.09

GARDAI in Carndonagh have called for local homeowners to be extra vigilant following what they’ve described as a spate of burglaries last week in Carndonagh, Malin and Culdaff areas in the last week.
Investigations are ongoing into the burglaries, which including a break in Drumaville, Malin last Wednesday during which a large amount of electrical equipment, including television, computer and games console were taken.
Gardai are advising home-owners to secure their homes when they are out for any length of time and to leave a number of lights on inside their homes to deter would be robbers.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent on Monday afternoon, Buncrana based Sergeant Danny Devlin said rumours that arrests made in relation to last week’s series of burglaries were unfounded, but he added that Gardai in the greater Carndonagh area had intensified their patrols and were working on a number of definite lines of inquiry in relation to the thefts.
“In relation to these burglaries, it’s important that people report any suspicious activity immediately, rather than waiting if you have taken down a car registration for example,” said Sergeant Devlin. “Members of the public can do their bit not to make it easy for burglars by making sure that all their doors are locked, especially those doors with handles on the outside of their homes.
“Sometimes people help facilitate burglaries by leaving their car keys on downstairs tables. What can happen is a burglar that arrives on foot can make off with your car full of more stolen items than they could carry by themselves.”
Sinn Fein candidate for North Inishowen Sean Ruddy said these break-ins are particularly disturbing in their nature where the homes in question were burgled prior to the occupants going to bed. Mr Ruddy confirmed he along with his party colleagues Cllr Padraig MacLochlainn and town Cllr Daren Lalor are seeking to hold an imminent meeting with the Superintendent in Buncrana.
