New Campervan Society in Inishowen 07.04.09

TWO campervan enthusiasts are hoping many more will get in 'convoy' and join their new Inishowen Campervan Society.
Michael Doherty of Binnion, Clonmany, and Mark Carlin, Buncrana, are setting up the new society to give a forum to existing campervan owners in the peninsula as well as people who want to start.
Michael began camper-vanning about five years ago as a result of his young daughter's allergies.
"She has allergies to wheat, dairy and dogs so when we would go away on holidays to rented accommodation, we wouldn't be in the place ten minutes before the allergies would kick in. This would be because the last person staying in the holiday home had a dog with them," he said.
"When we would go out for a meal to a restaurant there was so much on the menu that she couldn't eat, the waitress would look at us and wonder why we weren't getting a meal for her.
"We then decided we would get a campervan. That way, we knew we could keep the environment right for her and could make our own food." Michael built his first vehicle by converting a van. He sold this a year later to buy his current five-berth Ford campervan. He encouraged his pal Mark to get involved about a year ago. Mark adds: "We have two young Michael Doherty, left, and Mark Carlin in Michael's five-berth campervan.
children and it's a fantastic way of enjoying a fun-filled family holiday for a fraction of the cost which is a great plus in these days of recession. You can get a weekend away in the campervan for little more than you would spend if you were at home.” Michael and his family will campervan in Dublin for the Easter Bank Holiday while Mark and family are off to Belfast. Meanwhile, the two men and their families will head to Brittany in France in early August.
Michael and Mark hope many more will join the Inishowen Campervan Society. "The great thing about travelling with another campervan is that if anything happens, like a break-down, there is someone there for back-up," said Michael.
Meanwhile, the two attest to the "great craic" that's to be had on campervan holidays including "plenty of barbecues and sing-songs". "We hope the new society will help people to swap tips
about good places to stay, places to avoid and other handy pieces of information etc. We would also like to set up an internet forum in the future," added Mark.
