Carndonagh Jesuit ordained 05.07.09

CARNDONAGH man Cathal Doherty was recently ordained to the priesthood in St Francis Xavier’s Church in Gardiner Street, Dublin. The 42 year-old was ordained into the Jesuit order by Dr Diarmuid Martin, the Archbishop of Dublin on Friday, June 26 and celebrated his first Mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Carndonagh the following Monday.
Bus and carloads of family and friends from Carndonagh travelled to Dublin for the ordination and Fr Cathal’s mother Bridie described the ceremony as being “out of this world”.
Large crowds turned out to greet Fr Doherty on his return to Carndonagh on Sunday night and he was escorted into the Diamond by local Gardaí and members of the local scout troop.
“There were huge crowds out to greet him all the way from Muff to Carn and the weather was so kind that people lingered in the Diamond afterwards enjoying the refreshments and pleasant weather,” she said.
A son of Bridie and Neil Doherty of the Diamond in Carn, Fr Doherty lectured in UCD before deciding to train as a Jesuit.
He has spent the past seven years training in Birmingham, Dublin
and Paris. From September he will teach languages at Coláiste Iognáid in Galway. (Inishowen Independent)
