Fourteen conquer Mount Snowdon for
charity

THOUSANDS of trekkers were amused on Easter Saturday
by the spectacle of 14 Carn men hauling two fridges
up Mount Snowdon. You could say they became, er,
fridge magnets for a day.
Malcolm Carey, Finghin (Glackin) Doherty, Paddy Ward
and eleven of their friends climbed Wales' highest
peak on April 10 to raise money for Multiple
Sclerosis sufferers. Malcolm yesterday described the
adventure and how the 14 took turns in wearing the
fridges. |
"It was great craic. We
all made it to the top of the mountain in
four-and-a-half hours. It was a very surreal
experience.
"Mount Snowdon had around 6,000 people walking on it
on Easter Saturday. We met so many climbers from all
over the world including people from Italy and
France. They were clapping and cheering us on and
giving us money," he said.
"The weather was absolutely perfect and we took
turns wearing the fridges. |

Some didn't like
wearing the fridge as much as others so we didn't
carry them for an equal amount of time each.
"When you're wearing a fridge, you can't see your
feet so you have to rely on the others to say 'put
your foot here, put your foot there'. But it was a
great laugh and I would do it all over again." And
were there any hairy moments on the Mount?
"Actually, when you get to the very top there is a
little stone staircase and it's usually full of
people. One slip and you would fall 20-30 feet, so
with the fridges, that was a bit hairy. But we
managed it all right, thankfully," added Malcolm. |

So far the friends have
raised €7,000 and Malcolm, a monumental sculptor
with Wardstone in Carn, is confident they'll reach
their €10,000 target. MS Ireland was the chosen
charity for their quirky sponsored climb because
some of the group's families have been affected by
