AS A peninsula we can boast champion boxers,
footballers and rowers, all of our fine sportsmen
and women will have to bow down before the master
this weekend when Inishowen's Fittest Person is
crowned. The verdict will be delivered at The Gym in
Carndonagh this Saturday, November 7.
Gym manager Peter Doherty hit upon the novel idea.
“In the course of the past five years I have
encountered sportsmen men from all backgrounds,
football, Gaelic, hurling, rugby, boxing, athletics,
martial arts, tug of war and even American
football," he said.
“On top of this, there have been those who have
simply wanted to get fit and have to an impressive
extent. What we are intending to do is to test those
levels of fitness from lots of different sports to
determine who exactly is Inishowen's fittest
person.” |
Male and female
challengers will be put through a punishing
examination of their physical fitness. Tests of
aerobic fitness, strength and endurance have been
drawn up to ensure the broad spectrum of fitness
aspects are covered, according to Mr Doherty.
“This way we ensure that no sporting background will
be of more benefit than any other. The challenges
will present a level playing field thereby ensuring |
|
that the winner will
have an overall level of fitness and not simply
excel in one aspect of physical endeavour.”
“We hope that members from all the local sports
clubs will be represented, but also we want members
of the general public to have a go because, while
there will be a competitive edge the event, it will
also be a lot of fun,” added Mr Doherty. And you
don't have to be a member of The Gym to participate.
