Campaigners fight for free recycling 24.06.09

Inishowen Independent

A CAMPAIGN group has been set up in Inishowen to fight for the return of free recycling in Co Donegal.
Carndonagh-based Citizens Against Recycling Charges (CARC) held a protest and handed out leaflets last Friday at the County House in Lifford to coincide with the first meeting of the new Donegal County Council.
CARC says that over the years people got used to recycling their waste free of charge in Carn and other amenity sites throughout the county.
"The public acceptance of this place was tremendous and citizens of (Carn) and the wider area were disciplined, separating their goods and returning them.
"Now the recycling centre is almost abandoned and therefore we see a dramatic increase in fly-tipping in the countryside, and with more back yard burning, dangerous toxic fumes are released in our atmosphere," said CARC spokesperson Charlie Williams.

The group has started a petition to urge the local authority to change their policies and return the Carn recycling centre to a free service. Petition forms have been distributed in the shops and pubs all over Inishowen. CARC says business people's support for the campaign is immense. In just three weeks, more than 3,500 signatures have been collected with almost 1,000 from the Carndonagh area alone.
"People simply don't see the point of being charged for the privilege of recycling. The Council argues that, for example, paper and cardboard would now cost money to be processed. "In the long term, recycling pays for itself and the target should be to minimise the waste that goes into landfill," added Mr Williams.
