Local man takes over at HBOS 24.02.09

A BANKER with strong Inishowen connections is taking over as head of Bank of Scotland (Ireland). Joe Higgins, who becomes HBOS (Ireland) chief executive in April, is well known in the Moville area.
His parents Frank and Marie Higgins have a home in Greencastle, while his maternal grandfather was a native of the Glenagiveney area. His sister is Inishowen optician Irene Higgins while his brother Eamonn and family also have a house in Moville.
Tyrone-born Mr Higgins, is in his mid-40s and an accountant by profession. He is a former chief operating officer and executive director of Bank of Scotland (Ireland). He is currently head of mortgage lending at HBOS (Ireland) and commutes regularly from his Belfast home to his job in Dublin. He will take over as chief executive following the departure of Mark Duffy, who is stepping down after 16 years.
Mr Duffy said the sale of HBOS to Lloyds TSB and the completion of the Halifax retail project in Ireland, offered him "a natural point" at which to leave. He warmly congratulated his successor saying:
Joe Higgins
"I am delighted that Joe is my successor having worked with him for many years as a colleague and fellow director."
