Clonmany defends horse-shoe crown

CLONMANY'S successful horse shoe throwers will be
out to defend their national title when they host
the All Ireland Club Championships on August 1. It’s
the first time in five years that the championship
has been held in the peninsula.
Members of the 20 strong club, made up mostly of
Clonmany men but including Liam Ross (Carrigans),
Dan McConway (Shroove) and Peter McLaughlin (Limavady),
have stepped up their training recently, practising
Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday ahead of next month's
competition. |

Teams of throwers from
all over Ireland will make their way to the football
field at Moss Field in Carndonagh for the event, the
highlight of the Irish Horse Shoe Throwing calendar.
Sides from the south east of the country are
expected to give the local boys their biggest
challenge, but throwers from Galway are not to be
discounted either.
Also on Saturday, the All Ireland Doubles
Competition will take place at the same venue.
On Sunday the 2nd of August, as part of the Clonmany
Festival, the action moves to McHale’s Field when
the local throwers invite teams from Ireland,
Northern Ireland and England to take part in a
specially arranged international competition. |
On Sunday evening a
presentation dinner dance will be held in the Strand
Hotel, Ballyliffin at 10pm, where the winners from
both days competition will receive their trophies.
Everyone is welcome to attend, thrower and none
thrower alike.
Later in August the local throwers will represent
Donegal in the All Ireland County Championships in
Carlow. Urris native Michael McLaughlin who has been
competing in horse shoe throwing for over 20 years,
will captain the county side. The competition will
include a ringer event for the first time. |
