100 reasons to be cheerful 10.02.09

STUDENTS from St. Patrick’s Girls National School in Carndonagh teamed up with the Inishowen Independent at the weekend to join in a special celebration of the number ‘One Hundred.’
Girls at the Carndonagh school were busy on Friday taking part in a wide range of events to mark their 100th day at school, while the Inishowen Independent was gearing up for our 100th edition which hits the streets today.
According to Ailish Tully, Principal at St. Patrick’s GNS, the 100 days at school celebration has been celebrated at the school for the past few years and has always been a great success.
“From junior infants right through to sixth class everyone gets involved in a wide range of fun-based numeracy activities. It’s a day that all the students enjoy and it’s always great fun.”
Pupils at the school got involved in events like 100 minutes of maths that included things like making jigsaws, counting amounts from catalogues, building blocks and the ever popular maths trail.
Students also got busy writing 100-word stories and looking back to historical events from 100 years ago. Despite their hectic schedule, the girls of junior infants were only too glad to join in the
celebrations with the Inishowen Independent to help the paper mark our milestone 100th edition.
Editor Liam Porter described the 100th edition as a very significant event for the paper.
“Reaching the100th edition is a milestone for any business, but is particularly gratifying for the staff of the Inishowen Independent who, when we announced that a new paper would be launched here, raised quite a few eyebrows. At the time there were many who believed such a venture was not just risky, but who also believed it to be downright crazy.”
He said there were some who thought the paper might not even last beyond a few months but instead the paper has not only proved them wrong but has gone on to make an unbelievable impact in the peninsula.
Describing the reaction the paper has received from the Inishowen public as “nothing short of phenomenal,” the editor said it would be wrong to let this landmark occasion pass by without a sincere thank you.
“That thank you is extended not only to all of our readers but also to our advertisers and newsagents who have supported the paper and helped it grow. We really are grateful for all the support and we’re certain that the success story that we’ve just witnessed over the first 100 issues, really is just the beginning for the Inishowen Independent,” he concluded.
