Lifeguards for Inishowen beaches 19.03.09

LIFEGUARDS will be employed at Culdaff, Shroove and Lisfannon beaches this summer. Donegal County Council has advertised for the recruitment of beach lifeguards at Inishowen's three blue flag strands.
Local election candidate Charlie McConalogue welcomed the move and said safe and properly-serviced beaches would play a part in developing Inishowen’s tourism industry. “Inishowen has some of the best beaches in the country and they compare with any country internationally. I welcome the fact that Donegal County Council has advertised for beach lifeguard positions for this summer despite the fact that we are in tight economic times," said Mr McConalogue.
"Tourism industry experts are predicting an increase in the numbers of people taking domestic holidays this year and it is important that Inishowen meets these tough economic times by continuing to develop the tourist product available in the peninsula."

Cllr Dennis McGonagle who is retiring, said Inishowen’s beaches were among the peninsula’s greatest underused natural resources.
"The presence of qualified lifeguards is an important element in increasing visitors and beach activities. A lifeguard on duty, qualified to the highest standards as judged by the Irish Water Safety Association, will give water users and particularly parents the added confidence of knowing assistance is on hand should it ever be required," he said. He also called for Donegal County Council to liaise closely with Inishowen Tourism to explore ways of marketing local beaches and harness their potential.
