MOVILLE Community
College striker Gemma McGuinness and Carndonagh
Community School midfielder Georgina Gordon have
been selected for the Republic of Ireland’s under-15
squad of 22. International selectors first spotted
the girls when they played for Ulster in an
Interprovincial tournament in Athlone in November.
Several training sessions followed, and the girls
learned that they have been selected for the Bob
Docherty Tournament at the weekend. |
Republic of Ireland
under-15 assistant manager Margaret Mulhall
congratulated both girls on making the team and said
she hoped the Republic would retain the Bob Docherty
Cup which features the Republic of Ireland, Northern
Ireland, Scotland and Wales and will be staged in
Belfast on 6-9 April. The squad of 22 will be cut to
18 for the tournament with four reserves and the
girls will learn if |

they’ve made it at
their final training weekend on 21-22 March.
Gordon was a member of the Carn CS team that
defeated Loreto Convent Letterkenny in the Ulster
senior schools final last week, gaining a measure of
revenge for losing the under-16 decider to the same
opposition earlier in the season.
Carn’s reward for winning the Ulster title is a
national semi-final against Mercy Convent,
Roscommon, in Ballyshannon on Thursday where the
kick-off is 12.30pm.
Meanwhile, Greencastle FC’s Niamh McLaughlin (Jack)
travelled with the Republic of Ireland under-17 team
to Portugal at the weekend for a warm weather
training camp. The Republic will play the United
States in three friendly internationals from 10-14
March. (Inishowen Independent) |
