Award for Kinnego Bay's Armada
story

AN exhibition telling
the story of Inishowen's famous Spanish Armada
shipwreck has been commended at this year's Museum
of the Year Awards 2009.
'An Armada Shipwreck - La Trinidad Valencera'
exhibition at the Tower Museum in Derry received the
commendation at a recent awards ceremony in Dublin.
Derry City Council's Heritage and Museum Service
curator Craig McGuicken, said recognition at the
awards would help put the exhibition on the map.
"'An Armada Shipwreck' is one of Derry City
Council's Heritage and Museum Services most popular
exhibits, narrating the story of La Trinidad
Valencera, one of the largest ships in the Armada
fleet and how it floundered during a violent storm
in County Donegal. (The shipwreck) was discovered
almost 400 years later by divers from the City of
Derry Sub Aqua Club," he said. |

"It's a very visual and
interesting exhibition telling the story of the
people involved, the soldiers and sailors onboard
the ship and the divers and archaeologists who
discovered and excavated the ship. It includes many
interesting artefacts and is innovatively designed
to make it accessible for visitors, locals and
schoolchildren."
Derry Mayor Councillor Gerard Diver said recognition
at the prestigious all-Ireland awards ceremony was a
great achievement for the Tower Museum and its
staff.
"The Tower Museum was one of 70 entries across
Ireland so it is particularly good news that it
received an award." The Tower Museum has also been
shortlisted for an award as part of the Northern
Ireland Tourist Board awards to take place later
this month. |
