Marathon effort pays off with
€5,000
24.09.09
LOCAL novice runners
who took part in the Belfast Marathon Team Relay
event earlier this year recently presented the
proceeds from their fundraising efforts to the
special classes in Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana and East
Inishowen Special Needs Playground Fund.
Each of the groups received €2,500 from the runners
who had taken part in the marathon at the start of
the summer.
The local men and women entered the team relay event
and covered the full 26 miles of the marathon in 5
legs. Many of the runners had never taken part in a
marathon before, but all thoroughly enjoyed the
experience.
The runners divided themselves into three teams -
the ‘Bayfield Lads,’ the ‘Carrow Lassies’ and the
‘Inish Ladies’ for the marathon and while they
didn’t take the event seriously in the competitive
sense, each of the teams made sure they finished the
event in a reasonable time. |

Their hard work and
effort paid off when sponsorship came in following
the race and the local groups who received the money
were delighted with their efforts.
Sinead McLaughlin of Scoil Iosagain said: "we are
very grateful for the ongoing public support for the
school and we will certainly be putting this money
to good use".
Sean McCauley added: "We at East Inishowen Special
Needs are delighted to receive this substantial
donation. The money has already been committed to
the special needs playground in Carndonagh and while
it is still under construction we hope that it will
be completed and officially opened in the very near
future.”
On behalf of the 15 runners who took part, Karen
McCormick said: "our friends, family, work
colleagues and local community have been really
generous in support of our fundraising efforts.
Together we raised €5,000 for two very worthwhile
causes. We would like to thank everyone most
sincerely for their sponsorship.”.
