Liverpool champs have
strong Inishowen connections
LIVERPOOL side John Mitchel’s, who feature five
Inishowen men in their squad, qualified for the
All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship final
with a merited 0-10 to 0-8 victory over Connacht
champions Killala (Mayo) in Carrick-on-Shannon on
Sunday. Mitchel’s now have a date with Munster
champions Skellig Rangers in the All-Ireland final
in Croke Park on Valentine’s Day.
Rocky Ivers and Declan Noone (Urris), Joe Donaghey
(Burt), Conall Reddin (Naomh Pádraig) and Willie
Carter (Buncrana) all feature on the squad which won
the All-Britain championship in December and have
since defeated Leinster champions Moynalvey (Meath)
in the All-Ireland quarter-final earlier this month.
In Sunday’s semi-final, it was the Mayo men who
started the better and led by 0-3 to 0-0 early on,
but led by top scorer Paddy Mulligan, Mitchel’s drew
level in the 20th minute and two further points from
him and one from play from Rocky Ivers gave the
Liverpool side a 0-7 to 0-4 half-time lead.
Pre-match favourites Killala drew level midway
through the second half at 0-8 apiece, but two late
points from Mulligan sent Mitchel’s through to next
month’s All-Ireland final.
Their opponents on 14 February will be Munster
champions Skellig Rangers (Kerry). Skellig beat
Ulster champions Drumhowan (who defeated Donegal
champions Carndonagh last October) by 0-12 to 0-8. |
