Moville Boat Club ends season on a
high
13.11.09
MOVILLE Boat Club's
annual prize-giving last Friday was hailed a great
success by prize-winners and guests alike. The event
which took place in McGrory’s Backroom, Culdaff, was
organised by this year’s Commodore, George
McCormick.
“I am delighted with the generous support for this
year’s event and even more delighted that everyone
enjoyed such good food by McGrory’s and music by the
Cavanagh Brothers," said George.
“With three new prizes to present this year, I'm
confident that the club is moving forward in a
positive direction. We took a big leap out of our
comfort zone earlier in the season to run the Sanda
race which saw four boats from the Moville fleet and
three from our neighbouring club in Coleraine take
part in the first overnight offshore race. |

"We had trophies
specially commissioned for this race. First prize
went to Eclipse, Coleraine followed by Megaera,
Moville and Tamitroot, Moville. The feeder race was
won by Mahuri, Coleraine. We had great enthusiasm
and support from our colleagues in Coleraine for
this race and we are hoping to grow this race in
future years.”
Presentation of a handcrafted wooden prize for Punt
Sailor of the year was deferred until the New Year.
The trophy, which was made by Danny McDonald,
comprises the tiller from a punt owned by the late
Jack Gillespie (Master Mariner, Shrove) mounted on a
piece of mahogany from a new Foyle class punt (John
Daniel McCann). Elements from boats previously owned
and sailed by Jimmy Hegarty and Ken Doherty are also
included. After presentation, this stunning piece
will be on display in the Inishowen Maritime Museum,
Greencastle. |
Meanwhile, Michelle
McCann presented the Dan McCann Memorial Cruising
Shield to Garvan Meehan, skipper of the Aisling in
recognition of his family cruising log for this
season. Michelle gave a moving speech outlining her
late husband’s love and passion for cruising,
especially the Scottish Islands. By introducing the
shield into the club, Michelle |

is hoping to encourage
more families to use their boats for cruising as
well as racing.
Other prize-winners on the night included, John
O’Kane (Delta Blues for Oyster Cup), Owen Doyle and
Gerard Dougal (First Mates for Series I), Martin
McGuinness (Streaker for Series II), Bill McCann (Megaera
for Series III) and George McCormick (Tamitroot for
Skerries Race).
The outgoing Commodore of Coleraine Boat Club said:
“We always enjoy fantastic hospitality when we join
our friends from Moville Boat Club and this event
was no exception. We thoroughly enjoy the challenge
of interclub racing but more importantly the
friendships we are developing along the way.”
George McCormick added: “We enjoyed a fantastic
night and for me it was the perfect way to finish
out the season. I am very much looking forward to
next season." |
