AFTER a month long-wait for their opposition,
Moville will face Glenn in the preliminary round of
the Ulster Club Junior Football Championship this
weekend after Teconnaught were defeated in the Down
Junior Championship final on Sunday.
Moville will return to O’Donnell Park, the scene of
last month's Donegal Junior Final triumph, for the
Ulster preliminary round tie with Glenn this Sunday,
October 18. (Throw in 3.30pm).
Fresh from guiding their side to a one-sided victory
against Letterkenny Gaels in the league on Saturday
night, Moville manager Eddie Devine and his senior
staff travelled to Newry to run the rule over
Sunday’s opponents. Devine was impressed, but not
overawed by what he witnessed.
“Glenn were always in front, they controlled the
match, although Teconnaught got a late goal. Glenn
are a very useful side. They have two or three boys
up front that will cause us problems. They are
adequate in midfield as well.
“I think Glenn will give us a tougher match than
we’ve played this year to date. It’s a step up, a
slightly higher standard, but you have to expect
that in the Ulster Championship. Having said that,
if our boys play to their potential we are capable
of matching them,” said the Co. Derry man who has
transformed the fortunes of the Foyle-siders since
taking over the helm last season.
“This will be my first venture into the Ulster Club
Championship as a manager. I’m happy that game is
going to be played in O’Donnell Park. It’s been a
lucky ground for us this season. We played there
three times this summer, including the county final,
and have been successful on each occasion.”
Devine insists that following his scouting mission,
Moville will be well-drilled on the specific threats
the visiting Down champs will pose.
“I know the Glenn boys will be up for it, but we
will have to match that and ensure we are well
prepared for Sunday. We haven’t lost a Championship
match this year yet and we hope to continue that
run.”
Moville are still fighting on two fronts and will
hope to see off the Convoy challenge in the league
to ensure promotion back to Division Three of the
All County League at the first time of asking. For
Devine, the priority is always the next game.
“It’s important to everyone at the club that we are
playing intermediate football next year. Now we have
that in the championship next year but we want it in
the league as well.
“Having said that, any game in the Ulster Club
Championship is special, because these chances only
come along once in the lifetime. Now were are here
we want to go as far as we can in Ulster.”
Moville will be near full strength for the O’Donnell
Park showdown. Forward John Faulkner hurt his foot
in the game at Carrick Field on Saturday evening and
was taken off as a precaution, but is expected to be
fit to line out on Sunday.
“I know the boys are confident. We are more than
capable of winning on Sunday.” |
