THERE WAS an air of celebration in the village of
Newtowncunningham yesterday when the official
opening took place of the recently renovated and
refurbished Moyle National School.
A wide gathering of pupils and parents - past and
present - were out in force to mingle with local
dignitaries for what was a day of huge celebration
at the school.
School Principal, Pauline Edwards, explained that,
not only was the school celebrating the official
opening of its new extension, but was also
celebrating the fact that it has recently been
awarded a Green Flag.
She praised the "huge team effort" on the part of
pupils and parents over the past number of years to
bring the project to fruition.
Work on the school refurbishment began as the school
closed for the summer holidays last year and were
completed as the children arrived back for class in
September.
“The extension is much more than just an extra
classroom, we have now also got two offices, a
library and IT suite and lots of storage. It’s a
very sizeable extension and has almost doubled the
size of the school.”
The school’s original building which will be 25
years old this month has also got a facelift as part
of the work and the principal praised the huge team
effort from parents and past pupils in helping the
school.
“We had to pack everything up and take it at the end
of the school year and there was a huge number of
people who came along to help pack up and bring
things away. It was the same when we moved it, I
must say everybody has been hugely supportive.”
That support was also evident when it came to
fundraising for the school with parents raising in
excess of €50,000 through a ‘who wants to be a
thousandaire night.’
“We’re delighted with the support we have received
and we’re thrilled that those who came along on the
day got to see the new extension, but also some of
the projects the pupils have been working on.”
One of those projects has seen the school’s Green
School Committee achieve a Green Flag for the school
while pupils taking part in the Primary Science
project conducted experiments for visitors on the
day.
Historical items including photos and writing were
on display for the day of celebration while parents
provided tea and refreshments. |
