Businessman offers €1,000 reward
by Linda McGrory
AN Inishowen businessman is offering a €1,000
reward for information leading to the recovery
of €15,000 worth of tools stolen in a raid at
his premises. Bernard Quigg of Q Hire has
offered the reward after 12 items of equipment
were taken from his business yard at Moville
Road, Carndonagh.
It was the third time in two years his premises
was targeted. The thieves broke through a chain
and padlock on the entrance gate and also broke
through chains securing the equipment.
The stolen items were: one Mab gardening
rotovator worth €2,000; five Shatal and Wacker
vibrator plates for compacting earth and stone,
worth €1,000 each; two Marina self drive lawn
mowers at around €1,200 each and and four Honda
petrol power washers at €1,200 each.
"This equipment is vital for my business to
operate. I've had the loss adjuster from the
insurance company out to me but I don't know how
my claim will proceed. If I don't get the
equipment back or my insurance company doesn't
cover me, I'll be in a serious situation and
will have to make some drastic adjustments to my
business," said Mr Quigg. |
He urged homeowners and
business people in the peninsula to be more
vigilant. "From what I'm hearing from others,
burglaries are definitely on the increase again in
Inishowen. The public, and particularly businesses,
should up their security to make sure it's enough to
protect them."
Since the burglary, between 8pm and 9pm on Thursday,
October 22, Mr Quigg has ordered CCTV cameras and is
now waiting to have them installed. He said space
constraints mean he will still have to leave some
equipment outside but will try to keep the number to
a minimum in future. Gardai have taken an inventory
of the missing items and are |

investigating the incident.
Mr Quigg thanked a neighbouring businessman who rang
him on the night to inform him his gates were lying
open. He also thanked two local witnesses who saw
the hooded male occupants of a car and a van acting
suspiciously in Carndonagh on the night and were
able to furnish him with a registration number. He
understands the van may have originated in the wider
Letterkenny area but he is realistic about the
prospects of his property being returned.
"The information I'm getting is that the burgarly
was probably carried out by a group of people who
are operating all around Donegal. I don't think I'll
see these items again and I'll just have to take the
hit which will be very hard, particularly in this
economic climate.
"My business is very much tied into the construction
industry which has been badly affected in recent
years. I also do a lot of gardening equipment and
that was hit this year with poor weather so this was
the last thing I needed," he added. Mr Quigg said he
hopes to arrange a meeting with the local Garda
superintendent to request improved security patrols
for property owners in Inishowen. Anyone with
information should contact Gardai in Buncrana on 93
20540. |
