PARENTS in Clonmany
will be the first to take part in a pioneering new
course to support family life in a recession. The
free course is simply called 'Family Life in a
Recession' and is designed to support mothers and
fathers to find positive ways of meeting the
challenges of parenting when money is tight.
Marie Doherty works in Clonmany for the schools
programme 'Delivering Equality of Education in
Schools'. She explained: “Family life is changing
due to the recession. New pressures are affecting
parents and children. There is less money around,
parents who were out at work are now at home and
this creates challenges for family life.”
The course will be run by David Simpson,
co-ordinator of Promoting Fatherhood which has
already worked with mothers and fathers across
Inishowen.
There will be two introductory evenings at the
Strand Hotel, Ballyliffin. The first evening will on
Wednesday, March 18 for mothers, grandmothers,
stepmothers and any woman in a parenting role with
children. The second evening will be on Thursday,
March 19 for fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers and
any man in a parenting role with children. Both
evenings will start at 7.30pm. David Simpson said he
would like to see both parents get involved.
“Often it is the mother who goes to parents'
evenings and courses and the father is at home
looking after the children. We want to help the
whole family and so we hope the fathers will come to
the Thursday evening," he said.
"They make their own valuable contribution to family
life and deserve time and space to learn more about
being fathers in a recession.”
The programme will address changes in family life
and parenting due to the recession, handling changes
in children’s expectations and developing shared
parenting. For more information contact Marie on 087
7663668 or David Simpson on 93 81224. The programme
is free. |
