ROADS around Inishowen
will be upgraded to the tune of more than €800,000
under the latest allocation for regional and
secondary routes.
The Carndonagh and Buncrana inner relief roads have
each received €100,000 while the R238 Moville to
Derry Road has been allocated €600,000.
Local Senator Cecilia Keaveney said the latter was
earmarked for long-awaited works on the road from
Moville town centre to the local community college
to include links with the existing footpath.
A total of nearly €35m was this week allocated to
Donegal County Council for the maintenance of
regional and local roads.
Senator Keaveney said around 94% of Inishowen's
roads were classed are regional or local. However,
they carry about 60% of all traffic and 43% of all
goods traffic.
"It is, therefore, imperative that we maintain and,
where necessary, improve the network. Today’s
announcement will assist somewhat in these three
specific areas," she said.
"Of all locations, Inishowen is reliant on this type
of funding as we are not served by national or
primary roads which are funded under the National
Roads Authority.
"The question therefore always arises at this time
as to whether we do get a fair slice of the non
national monies that come into the county. That, no
doubt will be an argument our local councillors will
continue to fight when roads are being prioritised,"
she added. |
