'Silver surfers' complete ICRfm project 25.09.09

ICRfm will today air a programme created by a group of Inishowen over-60s who took part in a training project with the station.
‘Silver Surfing the Airwaves’ involved 20 members of the Inishowen community and helped equip them with new ICT skills including use of the internet and word processing.
All who took part were over 60 and while many had basic computer skills some had none at all.
The training was held in both Moville and Buncrana throughout the summer and was delivered by ICRfm's Marie McDonald.
“Training was very practical in that each step had a specific outcome in mind that was related to radio production. In order to research topics for a radio programme, the participants were shown how to surf the internet – they also used tools such as Google to track down the information and contacts they needed for certain subjects.
"Some of the participants even conducted their own interviews with community representatives like Anne Gill from Good Morning Inishowen. Word Processing skills were acquired when writing up scripts and questions for interviews and also for running orders for shows. Participants have been able to use the IT skills they gained during their daily lives to keep in touch ICRfm presenter, Marie McDonald.
with friends or even shop online for anything from clothes to flights," explained Marie.
The project was funded by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources through the eInclusion BenefIT Scheme. ICRfm's assistant manager Emma McDermott added: “This project is another example of the services a community station provides. Community radio offers a cheap form of advertising for local groups and an opportunity for local charities and voluntary groups to gain air-time to publicise the tremendous work they do."
'Silver Surfing the Airwaves' will air today, Friday, September 25 at 10am and will be repeated tonight at 8pm. Tune in to 105 or 107.6 or listen online at www.icrfm.ie .
