Winter takes hold in Inishowen

INISHOWEN was battered
by strong gales and wintry showers at the weekend
with gusts of 120kph recorded at Malin Head.
While it appears the peninsula escaped the worst of
the heavy snow and ice, there were reports of some
dangerous roads in localised parts of Carn and
Buncrana on Sunday night.
An ESB spokesperson in Donegal said there were no
widespread power-cuts in the peninsula although some
isolated faults did occur. |

"Inishowen escaped the
worst but faults were reported in some isolated
pockets. The west and north west of the county were
more affected and any cuts that were reported in
Inishowen would have been repaired relatively
quickly," said the spokesperson.
Hundreds of homes in West Donegal lost power at the |
weekend. Treacherous
driving conditions were reported on Barnesmore Gap
between Donegal Town and Ballybofey where a number
of cars left the road or had to be abandoned.
Meanwhile, Emily Gleeson of Met Eireann confirmed
that a gust of 120kph was recorded at Malin Head
weather station on Saturday.
She said Inishowen could expect cold, wintry and
unsettled conditions for the rest of the week.
"There will be a cold and frosty start to Tuesday
with some ice and possibly some lying snow. It will
be breezy enough too. A band of rain will move
across the country on Wednesday and temperatures
will rise with it but it will return to cool,
unsettled conditions on Thursday with the risk of
hail and sleet," she said. |
