win GAA All-Ireland title NW College...0-14 Coláiste Idé...1-10 THE Gaelic footballers of North West Regional College have won the Ulster Bank All Ireland Further Education Championship following a one-point victory in the final over Dublin-based Coláiste Idé. Played at Dundalk Institute of Technology, the team of students from the Strand Road Campus had previously secured their place in the final by defeating Carlow Institute 3-11 to 0-8 in the quarter final, and Cavan Institute 3-18 to 0–6 in the semi-final. The final was a tightly fought contest which saw the North West Regional College team surge into an early 5-point lead through points from Daniel Mc Laughlin (0-3) and Shane Barr (0-2). Although dominant for the first quarter, the local students failed to capitalise on the lion’s share of possession and Coláiste Idé began to get a foothold with some well taken scores to bring the score to 0-5 points to 0-4, before Pearse O'Doherty pointed with a well-executed kick from 30 metres. |
Coláiste Idé gave
themselves a huge boost with a goal which put them into
a one point lead for the first time in the game. North
West Regional College responded with a couple of scores
and the teams went in level at half-time. The Strand Road lads started the second half as the first with a period of dominance however they missed several good chances to take advantage of their lead before Daniel McLaughlin struck again. Coláiste Idé replied and the game remained in the balance. The sides traded scores with Shane Barr (0-2) and Mark O'Kane on the scoresheet for the College. The teams were deadlocked going into the final ten minutes. However North West Regional College showed immense character with Daragh Doherty and, man of the match Thomas McKinley, providing match winning scores to leave the Strand Road team victors in a pulsating match. Team manager Gerard Faulkner was delighted with the performance of his players; “The players deserve all the praise for the hard work and commitment they have put in throughout the campaign. Their display during the final was just fantastic, and we are all obviously delighted with the win. The team has brought great credit and success to our College, resulting in some much needed silverware! I thank and congratulate each and every one of the players, and team Coach Michael Toland for his invaluable input during the year”. This victory is a first ever championship honour for the Strand Road Campus, and the team includes students from Counties Derry, Donegal and Tyrone, with a certain number of the panel playing inter-county minor or U-21 football for their County.
