SOMETIMES A football match can hinge on a single moment
and when Conor O’Donnell nipped back onto Moville’s goal
line on Saturday night and saved Liam Prunty’s shot he
had kept his side in a game they then stole with a
brilliant Eunan Hegarty strike at the other end.
With just a minute to go Convoy were a point ahead and
seemed to have an opportunity to wrap the game up beyond
doubt when Liam Prunty seemed to have all the time in
the world to pick his spot beyond Moville keeper Maurice
McGeady
He got his strike past the keeper but it went straight
into O’Donnell’s waiting arms and Moville set off on one
last attack. Even that looked to have been snuffed out
when the ball was won in the corner by Convoy’s Emmett
McNulty, but when the ball was robbed from half forward
Laurence McMullan deep in his own half and played in to
Hegarty he rattled home a shot off the underside of the
bar to give Moville the lead and Convoy no time to peg
it back. |
In fairness to the visitors
they did have the luxury of lots of good possession in
the first half with midfielder Sean O’Hare in particular
winning some fine ball, but they were over elaborate in
the final third of the field and in the early stages
failed to make the home side pay for that possession.
Indeed with twenty-one minutes of the game gone the
sides were all square and only four points had been
scored in total. However even though they had been
shaded by some margin in terms of possession, Convoy had
by that stage chalked up not only as many scores as
Moville, but as many wides as well, both with four.
The home side had got off to a good start when John
Doherty who had an impressive game, started off on a
strong run before offloading to Laurence McMullan and he
split the posts with a sweet left-foot strike.
That score came in the first minute, but while Moville
dominated the next ten in terms of possession they
didn’t notch up a score until the 11th minute when Eunan
Hegarty finished off a good move with a first-time
strike from the ground.
Even then the visitors had over elaborated and had
finished a good build up with a shot at goal blocked by
a Convoy defender with the rebound falling to Hegarty to
point.
It seemed as if that would kick start them into action
and |
|
two minutes later they took
the lead, Sean O’Hare with a free straight in front of
goal to put Moville ahead by one.
But Convoy fought back strongly and towards the end of
the first half were the more dangerous looking side.
They drew level with an excellent point from Seamus
O’Donnell following good work by Liam Prunty and then
Prunty put the home side ahead with a fine point in the
25th minute.
Moville responded with a well-taken score from Michael
Browne in the 27th minute, but a long range strike from
Ciaran Porter and another good point from Laurence
McMullan, saw them go in at the interval with a 0-5 to
0-3 lead.
However less than a minute had elapsed after the
re-start when Nigel McMonagle finished after good work
by Michael Browne to leave just a point between the
sides again.
Convoy responded with an excellent point from the
raiding John Doherty and then with eight minutes gone in
the half extended their lead when Packie Mailey’s free
was fisted towards goal and although it was cleared off
the line, the loose ball was forced home by Seamus
O’Donnell.
It was to be the home side’s last score of the game
however and with ten wides kicked in the match they will
know that they were always in danger of being hit with a
sucker punch from Moville.
That’s especially since it was the visitors who had by
far the best of the play again in the last fifteen
minutes and they chalked up 1-4 without reply in the
last twenty minutes of the game. The first of those
scores came from Nigel McMonagle, with points also from
Odhran McDermott, John Faulkner and Sean O’Hare whose
point with two minutes left meant there was just a point
between the teams at that stage.
The best Convoy had managed in between was a long range
effort from Eoin Allan that had come off the post, but
Moville had also hit the woodwork at the other end
through Malachy McDermott.
Convoy will be hoping to have midfield pairing of Thomas
McHugh and Padraig Porter back for the second leg, but
with the away victory already secured, Moville will be
favourites now to advance. (Inishowen Independent)
