Carndonagh...1-12 (Ronan Doherty 0-7 (5f), Dermot McGonagle 1-0, Padraig Doherty 0-3, Shane Doherty 0-2). Moville...0-14 (Oran McDermott 0-11 (5f), Enda Faulkner 0-1, Chris McLaughlin 0-1, Evan McDermott). by Simon McGeady, Inishowen Independent, at Connolly Park AN INJURY time Ronan Doherty free ultimately settled this most entertaining of Inishowen finals in Carndonagh’s favour. Carn and Moville matched each other score for score throughout, and if there had to be a winner the boys from Foden just shaded the match with a dominant midfield showing and strong finish. A breathless first half was crammed full of stunning attacking moves with both sets of players showing their flair on the ball. Oran McDermott, the centre half forward, was a one-man wrecking ball. He scored all of Moville’s nine first half points. Sean Faulkner’s lads were caught cold in the second minute when the masterful Padraig Doherty hit a high ball into the full forward line which was spilled by a sky blue shirt. Dermot McGonagle pounced to beat Paddy Barr in the Moville goal. |

A free and point from play
from McDermott steadied the Moville ship. Shane Doherty
then hit Carn’s first point from play before McDermott
bent over a delightful 45 with his left foot to put the
minimum between the sides once again. Moville’s Donegal minor Enda Faulkner then saw his shot from a tight angle beaten around the post by Brendan McGonagle. The same Moville player showed his worth at the other end knocking the ball out of Rory Ward’s hand with the Carn player bearing down on goal. Carn’s backs had no answer to McDermott’s powerful running and had to watch as time and again he cut to the left and struck over. Still, Moville’s defence had enough on their plate. They struggled to cope with Carn’s early high ball into the forward lines and when the screening Padraig Doherty intercepted the ball 50 metres out and hit a leading pass for Ronan Doherty, the Moville defender had little option but to bring the Carn forward down for a penalty. Doherty took a point to make it 1-7 to 0-7 with five minutes to go. Sean McQuillan made a telling block to stop Moville falling further behind and the Carrick Field lads closed the gap to 1-7 to 0-9 at the break, Faulkner teeing up McDermott for a couple. |
Faulkner drew Moville level
for the first time at the start of the second half but
the remarkable rate of scoring couldn’t continue
indefinitely and in the next ten minutes Carn hit three
wides to Moville’s two plus a McDermott free off the
post. With Rory Ward and Brian Long beginning to boss the middle, a pair of Ronan Doherty frees saw Carn edge in front. As the pressure on the Moville goal mounted, Ciaran McDonald stood up to be counted. The big corner back had the determination to win the ball in front of his man. Moville continued to catch the eye going forward. Christopher McLaughlin came up from the back to score then Evan McDermott capped a flowing Moville move to make it 1-10 to 0-12 with ten minutes left. Carn pressed Moville back but poor finishing let the Foylesiders off the hook and Carn had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping out Oran McDermott. McDermott’s free pulled Moville level again late on but in injury time a foot block 30 metres out on the left presented Ronan Doherty with the chance to settle matters and he didn’t disappoint.
