MALIN enjoyed a comfortable victory over Naomh Mhuire in Connolly Park on Saturday night. The scoreline flatters the Lower Rosses side somewhat: Malin led by 0-9 to 0-0 after 20 minutes, and by 2-10 to 0-2 early in the second half. A late rally – featuring goals from Joe Kelly and Harry Harden – helped put a measure of respectability on the scoreboard for Naomh Mhuire, but they deep in relegation territory with games running out. Malin moved to second in the table with this win, and will be targeting a promotion play-off place.
Playing with the aid of the breeze, Malin raced into an early lead. Naomh Mhuire played a part in their own downfall, though. Corner forward Owenie McGarvey lined out as a third midfielder and Malin corner back Darren Doherty followed him out hitting three points in the first quarter of an hour, including his side’s first two points.
Paddy Kelly and Damian Ward pointed on either side of an Anthony Kelly free as Malin led by 0-5 to 0-0 after ten minutes.
Naomh Mhuire were penned into their own half in this opening period as Malin picked up all the breaks at midfield. They added further points through Darren Doherty and three Anthony Kelly frees before Naomh Mhuire got off the mark with a Sean Boyle point in the 24th minute.
Ciaran McGinley added a free two minutes later and the sides went into the break with Malin leading by 0-9 to 0-2.
Malin utterly killed the tie as a contest within five minutes of the restart. Michael Doherty got Malin’s first goal after a goalmouth scramble two minutes into the half and moments later Naomh Mhuire keeper Lee Boyle pulled Gary Farren down inside the parallelogram. Anthony Kelly struck the penalty well, but Boyle got down low to his right to parry it away to safety.
But Malin’s second goal wasn’t long in coming. Michael Doherty played a low ball through and Patrick McColgan raced onto it, dribbling it soccer style before slotting it low under Boyle to give his side a 2-10 to 0-2 lead with just 36 minutes on the clock.
Eoin Grant pulled a point back for the Lower Rosses side, and despite losing Tom McHugh to a straight red card, Naomh Mhuire closed the game out strongly.
Ciaran McGinley and Michael Doherty swapped points at either end before Naomh Mhuire got their first goal. They played a high ball into the square and Joe Kelly rose highest to punch the ball past Declan Lafferty and into the net.
Malin responded with two Anthony Kelly frees but Naomh Mhuire hit their second goal four minutes before the end. Another high ball into the danger area caused problems for the home team. Sean Boyle won it, and laid it back to substitute Harry Harden and the youngster finished smartly to the net.
Ciaran McGinley and Neil Anthony O’Donnell hit late points, but Malin had the last word when Gary Farren hit a point on the stroke of full time.
