Carrowmena crush Carndonagh

One look at the scoreline would suggest that this was a totally one sided match and that Carndonagh were totally outclassed. The reality was that while Carn didn’t deserve to win they certainly didn’t warrant a five goal hammering. With both sides undefeated thus far and fancied for promotion at season’s end, this was anticipated to be a tight game. However the home side struck early and after sustaining considerable Carndonagh pressure put the game beyond doubt with three goals in four minutes. |

Knowing what was at stake,
both teams started at a high tempo with Jonathan
McLaughlin shooting wide for the home side after being
played through and Matty Henry heading just wide after a
great cross from Brian Kone. Carndonagh came back with
Dermot Doherty hitting wide after taking advantage of
slack defending from the home side. A goal was coming
and it was Carrowmena that scored it. Kone crossed in
from the right wing the ball took a wicked deflection
off Gerard McEleney and landed to Dermot Harkin who
bundled home. A second goal followed soon after when Ruairí Dougal played a long ball out of defence that landed to Kone who lifted the ball over O’Donnell to make it 2-0. The Carndonagh defence were waiting for an offside call that never came. |

After an excellent result
last week against Clonmany it seemed like Carrowmena
would go on to trounce their visitors but Carndonagh
came back fighting. Ronan Doherty sent in a tricky free
kick that Michael Noone just about got to and McEleney
headed just wide from a corner. Ronan Doherty tested
Noone again minutes later with a free kick that the
Carrowmena custodian had to punch away. One of the most interesting aspects of the match was the duel between Kone and McEleney that lasted until Kone’s withdrawal midway through the second half. An example of this was a great saving tackle from the Carn centre back when the Ivorian seemed odds on the make it three. Carndonagh were pushing forwards with efforts from Darragh McLaughlin, Liam McLaughlin and Dermot Doherty but they just couldn’t find a goal. The visitors were nearly punished just before half time when Matty Henry found himself one-on-one with O’Donnell but the Carn keeper stood up and saved well. In the second half Kone had a few great chances to put Carrowmena further ahead but failed to test O’Donnell. Carndonagh had efforts too with Brendan Tabb and Tiernan Coyne both going close. Carndonagh were pressing and Michael Noone had to be at his best to save from Tabb. Carrowmena were still potent with David Houston spurning a good chance when the Carn defence fell asleep. Carndonagh were unfortunate not to get a goal back when Barry Fallon struck just wide after Michael Noone misjudged a ball in from Darragh McLaughlin. Carndonagh got rewarded for their effort on 73 minutes when Tabb pulled one back. Unfortunately for Carndonagh the goal seemed to reinvigorate Carrowmena who hit back with a vengeance. Paul Duffy made it 3-1 when O’Donnell totally misjudged the flight of a corner leaving the Carrowmena midfielder with an open goal. Carn didn’t even have time to draw breath before James Henry added a fourth with a sweet strike from 25 yards that O’Donnell could do little about. Four turned into five when Paul McGowan claimed his first of the afternoon rifling home after O’Donnell parried a Matty Henry effort. Stunned by this four minute salvo Carndonagh heads went down and Carrowmena grabbed another goal with five minutes remaining Paul Duffy released a ball to McGowan who easily rounded O’Donnell for his second of the day with the Carn defence nowhere to be seen. The win cements Carrowmena’s position at the top of the First Division on goal difference from Rashenny.
