THE DONNELLY sisters combined to drive a stake into the heart of Moville on Sunday and kill off their Ulster Championship challenge for 2009. The home side had no answer to the pace and movement of Tyrone inter-county forwards Joline and Cathy Donnelly who bagged four goals and six points between them.
The Tyrone champions arrived at Carrick Field on Sunday lunchtime as slight underdogs. This was the clubs first Ulster Championship appearance at this level for 11 years and they were playing a Moville side that had gone all the way to the provincial decider last term.
Moville have built a reputation as a potent attacking force but once this game settled down it became obvious that the Gerard McQuaid’s team were equally formidable going forward.
Indeed the only real difference between the sides was that St McCartan’s took their goal chances while Moville failed to convert a trio of excellent opportunities to score.
Anita Doherty hit the opening two points of the match but the home side’s self confidence took a dent in the 4th minute when, with their first decent chance of the match, the visitors took the lead.
After good build up along the left, Joline Donnelly took the ball and darted in on goal before finishing high over Aisling Newtown.
Moville did not seem unduly troubled by that
set-back and were soon in the lead again after scores from Niamh McLaughlin and Treasa Doherty, although McLaughlin might have done better in the 9th minute when Geraldine Harkin played her in on Siobhan McCarney’s goal.
Two scores from the speedy Joline Donnelly and a free from Cathy Donnelly wrested the lead back for the Tyrone champions before Anita Doherty struck back for the home side after a strong burst forward by Ciara Hegarty.
In the 20th minute Moville hit the front once more after scoring a goal of real quality. Ciara Hegarty’s diagonal ball into the left corner was superbly retrieved by Treasa Doherty who found Niamh Hegarty and she set up Harkin 10 metres out who, unselfishly, passed inside allowing Anita Doherty a simple finish to score.
That made it 1-5 to 1-3. Moments later the St McCartan’s keeper kicked the ball straight to Harkin forcing Kirsty McCaughey to concede a free that Niamh Hegarty converted.
Joline Donnelly almost got a second goal before the break but, after a quick one-two with Katriona McQuaid the left corner forward blasted into the side netting.
Moville finished the half on top and Niamh Hegarty underlined her value with a stunning point from wide on the left to make the halftime score 1-7 to 1-5 in favour of Anthony Doogan’s team.
The first ten minutes of the second half were scrappy, but Moville’s backs must take credit for keeping McCartan’s out. Deirdre Foley and Gemma Faulkner both made telling blocks.
Niamh Hegarty then charged down a clearance, rounded two maroon shirts before setting up McLaughlin whose goal-bound effort was blocked out for a 45.
McCartan’s sub Coleen McQuaid changed the course of the game between the 46th and 50th minute. First, Moville centre-back Sarah Faulkner fouled McQuaid for a penalty that Cathy Donnelly converted (against Faulkner as it happens, who went into goals and was Moville’s third different keeper on the day after Maressa McGettigan had taken the gloves from Newton midway through the first half).
The sub hit a point and shortly after Cathy Donnelly played a ball across goal that McGettigan couldn’t hold allowing McQuaid to poke home from close range.
Suddenly, Moville were 1-8 to 3-8 down in a game that had been on a knife-edge for three quarters.
Could Moville recover? Niamh Hegarty certainly thought so but unluckily saw a shot skim the crossbar and go over.
St McCartan’s were especially good at creating chances from wide positions all afternoon and with Moville pressing forward they picked the hosts apart on the break.
Eight minutes from time Cathy Donnelly played a perfect ball from the right half forward position into her sister’s path and Joline fired low to the net to seal the deal.
There was still time for two more goals and one penalty in a frantic finish.
The luckless Niamh Hegarty saw her penalty kick saved and her rebound hit the post – the third time a Moville player had struck the frame of the goal.
Ciara Hegarty gave Moville a glimmer of hope with three minutes left, sliding in to steer home Aisling Newton’s cross-shot. That made it 2-9 to 4-9, but fittingly Joline Donnelly had the last word, diving bravely in front of the onrushing McGettigan to punch Katriona McQuaid’s pass home.

In A Nutshell
Key Score
St McCartan’s third goal in the 50th minute, scored by substitute Coleen McQuaid, which put them up 3-8 to 1-8.

Turning Point
With Moville leading 1-8 to 1-5 in the 38th minute Niamh McLaughlin played Aisling Newton in on goal but her shot rolled against the post and went wide. A six-point lead at that stage could have demoralised McCartan’s.

Key Player
Joline Donnelly. The St McCartan’s corner forward’s searing speed and excellent movement put her head and shoulders above the other attackers on show in a game dominated by both side’s forward lines.

Man in the Middle
Paul Swift (Monaghan) had a decent game and was generally on top of things. Few could complain about the two penalties he awarded. Still, a reluctance to punish a couple high tackles with more than a verbal warning could be view as leniency.
