Support needed for bra record
breaker

LOCAL women are being
urged to give their support to a world record
challenge in aid of breast cancer awareness and
they’re being urged to give that support quite
literally as work has begun across Inishowen on a
bra collection!
The organisers are hoping that women from all over
the peninsula will ‘bring a bra to town,’ in the
hope that at least 120,000 bras will be gathered for
an attempt to enter the Guinness book of records.
According to local organiser Maureen Greene, the
nationwide campaign is hoping that it can beat the
114,000 bras collected in the previous world record
attempt on the island of Cyprus.
The local woman said there would be a number of
collection points around Inishowen and she was
hopeful that many local women would participate in
the novel event which aims to raise awareness and
some funds. |

“Bras in all shapes and
sizes and colours and types from mini-muffin cases
to boulder holders, all are more than welcome. We’re
not looking for people to go out and buy ones, just
drop in bras that you no longer need then they will
be hooked together in an ‘Inishowen Chain’ and then |
forwarded to Cancer
Care West for inclusion in the Guinness entry,” said
Maureen.
Maureen is also hoping that shops, businesses and
other organisations will hold a “bring a bra to work
day” asking employees to gather as many bras and
euros as they can from family and friends and bring
them in to work on a designated day (before the 13th
November) for a ‘bra bin bag collection.’
“If a company decides to do a sponsorship, they
should count the number of bras and euros and put
that information on a note along with the company
name and include it in the bin bag - so that each
can be properly acknowledged,” Maureen said.
She also explained that collection bins with the
familiar pink ribbon will be available in Brennan’s
Pharmacy, Buncrana; Grants shoe shop, Buncrana; Macs
newsagents, Buncrana; Bradley’s filling station in
Fahan or the Post Office in Burnfoot.
“A donation of €1 with each bra would also be very
much appreciated, as it goes to cancer research but
because the drop-offs will only be available until
the middle of November the rush is on.”
Maureen explained that the ‘Inishowen chain’ and the
other bras collected across the country would be
hooked together for the world record attempt.
“It is planned that the bras will be hooked together
in an unbroken chain and taken to the top of Croagh
Patrick sometime at the end of November to beseech
the Irish patron saint's intercession on behalf of
all those who are facing cancer - particularly
breast cancer, which strikes approximately 6000
women in Ireland alone each year,” she said.
