'Big Brew' for lovely Mena 06.05.08

THE Burns family of Burt did their late mother Mena proud on Saturday with a fabulous 'Big Brew' in aid of the Alzheimer's Society of Ireland.
Burt Hall was filled with buns and cakes, fun and laughter, as the local family and friends remembered 82 year old Mena who sadly passed away last December.
The Burns family from Burt outside the local hall where they held a Tea Day for the Alzheimer's Association of Ireland.
She had Alzheimer's for ten years and was cared for at home by her large and loving family of sons and daughters.
One of her daughters Ellen Quinn explained that the final four years of their mother's illness were "very bad". But luckily, their large family afforded them a flexible rota system that allowed Mena to be cared for at home.
The family acknowledged that it was more difficult for smaller families to care for a person with Alzheimer's in their own home.
The Burns family also thanked their late mother's "fantastic" district nurse, Suzanne Harkin, for all her help, support and advice.
Teapots in hand, they chatted to everyone who came through the door on that sunny afternoon to have a cuppa with them and give a donation.
An antique dresser adorned with fancy teacups and cakes was a clever centrepiece for the feelgood fundraiser. Daughter-in-law Bridie Burns said the late Burt woman would have approved of the Tea Day in her memory.
"It's a lovely tribute to Mena. She was a lovely, lovely woman and she would have enjoyed this day very much. She really enjoyed the craic and the music," she said. For more pictures from the Burt 'Big Brew' click here
