CARERS in Inishowen
will see their annual Respite Care Grant rise this
year by 200 to 1,700.
Donegal Senator Cecilia Keaveney welcomed the rise
announced yesterday by Social and Family Affairs
Minister, Mary Hanafin.
"The carers' respite grant now increases by 200 to
1,700 per annum, with over 48,000 Carers set to
benefit throughout the country," said Senator
Keaveney.
This grant is available to all carers providing
full-time care and attention to an older person or a
person with disability, regardless of their means or
social insurance contributions.
"If carers are providing full-time care for more
than one person, they may be entitled to 1,700 in
respect of each person they are caring for. Another
feature of this particular grant is that there is
flexibility in how the carer may spend it."
The Moville-based senator said she would like to see
the numbers qualifying for carers' grants increase
in further budget measures.
"The Respite Care Grant was a hugely important
initiative in itself. It has regularly increased and
provides a significant contribution to enable carers
to get a much-deserved break which can benefit them
as well as their family members," she added.
Meanwhile, there will be a fundraiser this Friday,
June 6, in aid of the Inishowen Carers' Support
Group. The event takes place in the Squealin' Pig
pub in Muff from 9pm to 1am with music and
storytelling with Breezy and dancing to Capricorn.
