Wake up call for Carndonagh
17.07.08
Public urged to
voice their opinions at meeting next week
MEMBERS of the public in Carndonagh are being urged
to come along to a public meeting next week to
discuss the future development in the town, with the
local Carndonagh Community and Rural Development Co.
Ltd., (CCRDC) hoping that a series of hard-hitting
posters might stimulate the interest of the public
to attend.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent yesterday,
Paddy Doherty, administrator of CCRDC, said that the
meeting was very important for the town adding that
it would be interesting to see how the locals react.
“We need to have a clear picture of where we are
going as a community. It’s time to mobilise public
opinion, show the Government and County Council that
we have a voice and demand a fair crack of the whip
for Carndonagh. It’s also important to show
prospective investors that we have a vibrant and
committed community spirit in the town,” he said. |
Mr. Doherty suggested
that the posters which carry the heading “Does
Carndonagh need a wake up call?” were hard-hitting,
but said that the town really needed to mobilise its
people to secure its future.
“The present economic climate is such that
communities all over Ireland are coming together in |

order to lend their
support to promote their town and to create
employment opportunities. For example, we have been
given funding for an Enterprise Park but we need to
know that the people of Carn are one hundred per
cent behind us if we are to overcome the
difficulties that have been placed before us.”
The CCRDC representative also suggested that the
meeting will provide a platform for the local
community to air their opinions on what needs to be
done to attract additional investment and jobs to
Carndonagh and to regenerate the social fabric of
the town.
“No doubt there will be many other issues raised on
the night and we feel that the time is now right to
address as many topics as possible that affect our
town. If we are to progress, we need to proceed on a
united front with total commitment from the whole
community.”
According to Mr. Doherty local groups in the
Carndonagh area had received letters of invitation
to next week’s meeting, but admitted that some may
have been overlooked although not intentionally.
“Regardless of whether a group gets a letter or not,
we want them all represented on the night. We really
need to get this debate moving,” he said.
The public meeting will take place in the Colgan
Hall, Carndonagh, on Monday next, July 21 at 8.30pm. |
